Fresh Fish-Help for the New Recruit

Where to Start

Choose a Side. I am assuming since you are here you plan to be a Maine Rebel.

Do not buy equipment yet!

Hopefully, you will want to be as authentic as possible and wearing a uniform or carrying equipment that is incorrect will ruin your impression.

You must educate yourself before buying. Do your research, or talk to those who have, to find out what is CORRECT for YOUR impression!

Beginners should start by attending reenactments and observing what goes on.

Get a feel for the atmosphere and conditions of a living history event before  you rush to buy uniforms & equipment.

Once you're sure that the discomfort (sleeping on cots or bedrolls, wearing uncomfortable clothes, and generally avoiding anything "farby") is worth it, then find reputable dealers to buy from.

Beware cheap imitations!

Many items can be made if you or someone you know sews.

You should expect to spend between $1200 and $1500 to outfit yourself as a Civil War soldier

New recruits shall be given two (2) calendar years to outfit themselves in proper authentic uniform that shall consist of the following articles of clothing, accessories and weapons:

·                    Fatigue Jacket (five button Regimental Coat) or Frock Coat or Shell Jacket,

·                    Wool or period cotton trousers

·                    Forage cap, Kepi, Slouch Hat, or period Civilian hat

·                    Issue shirt or authentic period shirt

·                    Brogans or similar period shoes

·                    Cartridge box

·                    Canteen (wood, tin, or stainless steel if covered)

·                    Cap pouch

·                    Slings

·                    Infantry waist belt

·                    A period cap lock military firearm

It is highly recommended that the recruit purchase a Three Band Enfield, Three Band Springfield, or a CS Richmond Musket due to safety reasons and restrictions of firearms at certain events. The use of flintlock weapons will not be allowed at any event.

New recruits are expected to have a complete uniform by the end of their first calendar year of membership with the leather goods, weaponry and other accouterments by the end of their second calendar year of membership.

After having obtained the required gear, a member may obtain extra items for his/her impression such as gaiters, great coats, knapsacks, vests, tin cups, plates, etc.
